What’s In a Name

I wrote another Bible Talk for our group tonight. Here it is:

What’s in a name?

What nickname did you grow up with?
Was it a fun one or possibly hurtfull?
    How did you get it?

Have you ever given someone else a nickname?
    Kids, spouse, friend

What does your name mean?
    Andrew: Strong and brave
    Edward: Wealthy guardian
Use internet to look up the meainings for names of people present.

Names can be self fulfilling prophesies. Why do you think that happens?
We become convinced it’s true so we start to act that way.

The Bible has some people with nicknames too?

    Genenesis 17:5
    Abram: Exhaulted Father
    Sarai: Argumentative
    Abraham: Father of many
    Sarah: Lady

    Genesis 25:26
Jacob: He grasps the heal, deceiver
    Genesis 27:19

Other times it’s because we will become something greater than we are now.

Mark 3:17 James and John, sons of thunder.

Sometimes we want to get rid of a dubious reputation
    Genesis 32:8
From Jacob (deceiver) to Israel: He struggles with God

    Saul becomes Paul Acts 13:9

When people hear your name, what do you want them to think?
    Loving, Caring, Happy
    Ditzy, strange, weird

Proverbs 22:1 A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. How do we get a good name?

The best way to get a good name is to be close to God, study the Bible, and be influenced by spiritual people instead of the world.
